Greene County News

XENIA — The Greene County Safe Communities Coalition has reported that as of June 30, there have been a total of five traffic fatalities in Greene County, three of which occurred in the second quarter, April to June.

All three fatalities reported for the second quarter of 2016 occurred in June. According to local law enforcement, seat belts were not used in a crash on June 2, while excessive speed and alcohol contributed to a crash that occurred on June 24. Law enforcement also reported that those involved in the June 24 fatal crash were properly restrained.

The top five contributing circumstances in these second quarter crashes in Greene County were (in order): failure to yield, improper lane change, failure to control, excessive speed and following too closely. Drivers are reminded to avoid distractions while driving, to drive sober and to have everyone in the vehicle wear a seat belt.

According to the Ohio Department of Public Safety’s crash statistics, a total of 276 people were injured during the second quarter due to vehicle crashes, with 112 of those individuals being between the ages of 16-30 and 75 of whom were between the ages of 31-50.

The next meeting of the Greene County Safe Communities Coalition is at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, at the Herman N. Menapace Center for Health Education in Xenia. The public is welcome and invited to attend. For more information, contact Jillian Bothwell at 937-374-5683 or email [email protected].
