“He replied to him, ‘Who is my mother, and who are my brother?’ Pointing to his disciples, he said, ‘Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.’” (Matthew 12:48-50)

Mothers, brothers and sisters imply close relationship. These are people with which we live and work. These are the people that make up our life. These are the people that affect how we live. Thus, it is a good example of who we are as the children of God. We are related because we have in common a desire to obey the will of our God, our Heavenly Father. That obedience comes through our relationship with Jesus and the work of the Holy Spirit within us. This is indeed our true Forever Family.

Jesus is talking about a Heavenly Family. Our earthly family is precious to us. There is no question about that. We live together daily in a special relationship. That relationship becomes even better as we, together, are part of God’s Forever Family. That relationship becomes better as we are able to see the worldwide communion of God’s children in Christ. May our Lord God strengthen His children worldwide to do His will.

Heavenly Father, we are Family. Because of Your faithfulness to Your creation and the sending of Your Son, Jesus, to reconcile us with You, we are a Forever Family. Help us to live like Your children doing those things that please You and bless the world. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
