Ritter’s hosting Olympic sendoff

BEAVERCREEK — Ritter’s Frozen Custard will host an Olympic Trials Send Off celebration for international race walking competitor Susan Randall of Beavercreek. Randall is one of the top-14 racewalkers in the nation who will be competing in the U.S. Olympic Trials on June 30-July 2 in Charlotte, N.C.

The Send Off will take place from 5-8 p.m. June 24 at Ritter’s, 2531 Dayton Xenia Road. Randall will be on hand, and several area businesses have provided Raffle Baskets for the occasion. Tickets cost $5 for six, $10 for 12. A percentage of the evening’s sales at Ritter’s will go to help support Randall’s Olympic effort.

Track and field camp

SPRINGFIELD — Wittenberg University is hosting at Track & Field Camp on June 27-29, for student athletes in grades 7-12. Resident cost including lodging, tuition, meals and a T-shirt is $325, commuter cost tuition, meals and T-shirt is $285. Athletes will receive expert instruction in sprints, hurdles, jump and throws from college coaches throughout the Midwest. Contact Tessa Roberts at [email protected] for more camp information.

Tate named head coach

BELLBROOK —The Bellbrook-Sugarcreek School District and the Bellbrook High School Athletic Department announced Wednesday that Donnie Tate has been named the varsity head coach for the Bellbrook boys basketball team.

Tate has been an assistant coach at Carroll High School – 2011-‘12 and 2014-2016 and Beavercreek High School – 2003-2008. He served as Carroll’s Freshman boys basketball coach from 2008 to 2011. He replaces 14-year head coach Perry Caldwell who resigned after last season.

Greene Trails Cycling Classic

XENIA — The 2016 Greene Trails Cycling Classic will take place July 14-17 with the Greene County Fairgrounds Recreation Center serving as home base for the hundreds of cyclists expected to attend from all over the region. Excursions will be planned for each day of the event.

Registration includes Fairgrounds Recreation Center campsite, Support and Gear (SAG), fully-supported rest stops, purchase pick-up, breakfast daily and all evening entertainment including meal on Thursday and Saturday night – if registered for Thursday and Saturday.

Track club program under way

YELLOW SPRINGS — The Southwest Ohio Track Club’s Summer Track and Field Program has begun. This program is open to youth (7 years older) and older (including Masters). Practices are on 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at Yellow Springs High School through July 21. The summer program is a certified USATF program with excellent coaching and training. Two Raiders earn regional honors

FAIRBORN — Senior pitcher Jesse Scholtens and senior outfielder Ryan Fucci were selected to their respective All-Midwest Region teams by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) on Wednesday.

Scholtenswas named to the region first team. A First Team All-Horizon League honoree this season, Scholtens led the league in starts with 16 and in innings pitched with 109.2 while tying for the league lead in wins with a record of 10-1. He finished second in strikeouts with 95 and third in both earned run average at 2.95 and in opposing batting average at .220. In league play, he went 6-1 with a 2.17 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 62.1 innings.

Fucci was a second-team regional selection. Also a First Team All-Horizon League selection in 2016, he hit .326 with a team-best 11 home runs, 64 RBI and 26 stolen bases. He finished first in the Horizon League in home runs, RBI and stolen bases, second in total bases (124), fourth in slugging percentage (.525), fifth in runs scored (51) and seventh in hits (77) and on-base percentage (.412).

Both players were selected in the Major Baseball Draft this past weekend as Scholtens was chosen by the San Diego Padres in the ninth round with the 264th pick while Fucci was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 25th round with the 747th pick.

Raiders volleyball announces schedule

FAIRBORN — Eleven home matches, including the season-opening Holiday Inn Invitational, highlight the 2016 Wright State volleyball schedule, which was announced on Monday.

The Raiders, under fifth-year head coach Susan Clements, open the season at home Aug. 26-27 with the Holiday Inn Invitational at the C.J. McLin Gymnasium. WSU will be welcoming in crosstown rival Dayton along with Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and Toledo for the two-day affair.

Wright State then opens September with the Golden Flashes Classic, taking on Boise State, host Kent State and Eastern Michigan before traveling to Morehead State on Tuesday, Sept. 6.

WSU men’s soccer slate announced

FAIRBORN — With trips to Portland, Oregon State, Cincinnati, Virginia Tech, North Carolina State and Penn State and a slate of six home matches, the Wright State men’s soccer team will be challenged more than ever in 2016.

The season starts on Friday, Aug. 26, at Portland followed by Pac-10 member Oregon State two days later. OSU finished last year at 12-8-1 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. September begins on the road as well with a match at Cincinnati. The Raiders defeated UC at home 3-0 in 2015.

The home slate opens on Labor Day, Sept. 5, with a match up against Duquesne. September also includes league games against UIC at home and Green Bay and Northern Kentucky away. The I-75 Bowl will be played at Bowling Green this year on Sept. 13 followed by WSU hosting Eastern Illinois on Sept. 21. The month ends with a contest at Atlantic Coast Conference member North Carolina State, Sept. 27.

Wright State releases schedule

FAIRBORN — Matches with Ohio State, Notre Dame and Dayton, along with the Horizon League schedule, dot the 2016 Wright State women’s soccer schedule as released by head coach Pat Ferguson on Monday.

The season kicks off with matches Aug. 19 at Notre Dame and Aug. 23 at Ohio State followed by a third road match Aug. 26 at Tennessee Tech. The Irish advanced to the second round of the 2015 NCAA Tournament and finished with a record of 14-5-1 while the Buckeyes went to the NCAA’s third round, ending at 13-7-3.

The home slate opens at Alumni Field with Bucknell at 2 p.m. on Aug. 28. Dayton visits Alumni Field at 7 p.m. on Sept. 18. WSU won 1-0 at UD last year. The Horizon League schedule includes home games with Detroit, Green Bay, Valparaiso, Northern Kentucky and Illinois-Chicago. The regular season ends with a rematch of last year’s Horizon League finals with a game Oct. 28 at Oakland. The Golden Grizzlies defeated the Raiders 1-0 in overtime to advance to the NCAA Tournament. The league tournament starts with home games on Oct. 31 and continues with the semifinals and final at the #1 seed Nov. 3 and 5.
