Fall hockey camp offered

BEAVERCREEK — Academy Hockey is a new and exciting opportunity for area high school players to improve skills and continue enjoying the game of hockey off-season. Academy Hockey Program goals are open opportunity and skills development. This program is available to all area high school players and is endorsed by Dayton area High School coaches Alter, Beavercreek, Centerville, Springboro, and Troy. The program meets all OHSAA pre/post criteria — and former Division I Hockey players form the core of the coaching staff.

A pre-season fall camp will run on Thursdays or Wednesday and Sundays, Sept. 8-Oct. 30 with one session of skills development and one session of scrimmage games, at a time and location to be announced. Camp is open to all area high school hockey players. Must have a current USA Hockey registration — last year’s is good through Aug. 31 and you need a liability waiver. Xenia Tornadoes tryouts

XENIA — The Xenia Tornadoes semi-professional football team will hold a tryout for its 2017 team at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17 at Spring Hill Park, located just off Ormsby Drive. Tryouts are free, make sure you bring water cleats and shorts. Tryouts will consist of agility drills, route running, and more.

Central State names induction class

WILBERFORCE — The 2016 Hall of Fame Luncheon will be held at Country Club of the North 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14. All those planning to attend must RSVP prior to the event and purchase tickets on or before Friday, Oct. 2.

Five individuals and four teams make up this year’s class: Leonard “Tony” Blaine ‘62, John E. Day ‘71, Eric Love ‘83, Dr. Paul Nitz, James Rollins ‘96, 1960 & 1962 men’s cross country teams, 1983 football team and the 1991 women’s track & field team.

Xenia sports passes

XENIA — The Xenia High School Athletic Department will be offering four different all-sports passes for the 2016-17 school year. Passes are good for unlimited admission to all home Xenia athletic events for middle school and high school. Passes are not valid for away contests or Ohio High School Athletic Association-sanctioned tournaments.

The following passes are available: Student pass $50; adult pass $75; family pass $225 — good for four people in the same household. Additional family members in the same household may be added for $25 each. A senior citizens pass is available free to age 62 years of age and older.

Wrestling program seeks coaches

FAIRBORN — The Fairborn varsity wrestling program is looking to start up the Skyhawk Youth wrestling program. Fairborn is currently looking for coaches and directors. Contact head coach Bill Dawson at 937-302-7094 or the high school athletic office at 937-878-6305.

Shady Bowl Speedway

DEGRAFF — Rain cancelled the racing action at Shady Bowl Speedway last Saturday. It was set to be the final points race for 2016 and Kids Night. The Kids Night penny scramble and big wheel races will be held Saturday, Aug. 27. The Main Event Super Late Models will make their first showing on that date. The pure stocks, tuners, compacts and spectator drag cars are also set to race along with the Main Event cars.

There will be no racing on Saturday, Sept 3 so the drivers can compete on the famed half mile Winchester Speedway. The Saturday, Sept. 10 program has been changed to Sept. 11 so fans and drivers can go to the Columbus Motor Speedway as it closes its doors after 71 years of racing. The final points race for Shady Bowl drivers will be on the 11th and the 2016 champions will be crowned.

Reds offering ‘Sliding into Om’ yoga session

CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Reds Major League Baseball organization is inviting yoga practitioners of all skills and ages to enjoy “Sliding into Om,” a one-hour yoga session, 8:30-9:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 3 on the Great American Ball Park field in downtown Cincinnati.

For $15, fans can practice yoga on the outfield, and get a View Level ticket to the 1:10 p.m. Sept. 4 Reds game with the St. Louis Cardinals. All yoga participants will be recognized during the seventh inning stretch. For $25, fans can obtain the same package as above, plus receive an exclusive Cincinnati Reds yoga mat. Drifting Series heads to Kil-Kare Raceway

WESTFIELD, Ind. — The Midwest Drift Union will bring the third round of its Championship Series to Kil-Kare Raceway on Sept. 17 in Xenia.

The MDU was founded in 2010 as a Midwest regional feeder series with the intention of advancing the area’s top drifting competitors to the professional level. Last season, the top-3 drivers were rewarded with a Formula Drift Pro 2 competitors license.
