XENIA — In a girls high school golf match between a pair of evenly matched teams, host Carroll claimed a narrow 193-200 win over the Greeneview Rams, on Aug. 30 at WGC Golf Course.

Greeneview coach Mark Mash was ecstatic, despite the loss.

“We shot 200. We tied our all-time best team score tonight. I’m tickled to death,” he said. “And I’m really happy too, because this is the course where we will play our (Division II) sectional tournament on. So they’ll have confidence here, that they can play well here.”

Playing from the women’s red tees, Carroll’s junior MacKenzie Donaldson claimed medalist honors with a 4-over 42 over WGC’s back nine holes. Amy Li, another Patriots junior, finished with a 48, sophomore Olivia Hickman shot a 51 and freshman Catie Doohen was Carroll’s fourth score at 52. Junior Hayley Jesse finished with a 55 for the Patriots, now 15-16 this season.

“We graduated four seniors off a team that went to state last year,” said Carroll coach Roy Cassidy. “So we’re in the process of rebuilding, but we’re making great improvement. Our young girls are really coming on.”

While Carroll calls WGC home, Cassidy said the team learned from this match by playing on the less familiar back nine holes. The Patriots, who will also play in the D-II sectional tourney at WGC, usually contest their home matches on the front nine.

According to the Greater Catholic League Co-Ed website, Carroll’s next scheduled match will be back at WGC on Sept. 9, a tri-match with GCL schools Kettering Alter and Dayton Chaminade Julienne.

Greeneview’s Frankie Fife led the Rams with a 43 while fellow senior Celine Freetage shot a career-best 44. The team’s third senior, Alexis Abling, scored a 55, and freshman Rachel Strickle was the fourth score with a 58. Freshmen Reagan McIntire and Darby Nolen finished with scores of 61 and 63 respectively.

“Celine Freetage shoots her personal best, ever. Frankie Fife shoots a 43, which is great stuff, and our other senior, Alexis Abling, shoots a 55 which is one of her lowest rounds. So we’re starting to do some good things.

“And it’s always good to play a round of golf with coach Roy Cassidy. It’s always good to see him.”

Greeneview is now 8-2 on the season. They’re undefeated in Ohio Heritage Conference play at 4-0, but that unblemished mark will be definitely tested Thursday, Aug. 31 when they take on Milford Center Fairbanks at the Marysville GolfClub. According to Mash, Fairbanks finished third at the state tournament last season.

“They are loaded. They’re an extremely extremely talented team,” he said. “If we play our super best, we still might lose by 30. But that’s okay, they’re that good. I’m just thrill to death with the way we’ve been playing our last few times out.”

This is Greeneview’s second year of ever having a girls golf team. Seniors Fife and Freetage said they can feel the difference in the team during its second year of play.

“I think we played really well today. We’re finally starting to play how we know we can play,” Fife said. “Especially since there are six of us this season, we can take the top four scores instead of having just four girls. It builds competition within the team.”

“I’d say we’ve bonded more as a team too, since there are more of us out here,” Freetage added. “And yeah, the scores are a lot better than they were last year. That’s been nice, too.”
