BEAVERCREEK — Long-time Beavercreek educator Dr. Anthony “Tony” Romano died Dec. 20.

Mr. Romano, who was also the public address voice for Beavercreek’s girls basketball team for years, would have celebrated his 88th birthday Dec. 26.

“Beavercreek City Schools owes a debt of gratitude to Dr. Anthony Romano,” according to a statement from Ryan Gilding, public relations specialist for the district. “His many years of tireless service to our school district created a foundation for the many opportunities our children enjoy today. All who knew him personally were proud to have him as a friend while all of Beavercreek was fortunate to have him as a leader. Dr. Romano’s legacy of service and sacrifice is an example that we all strive to emulate in the pursuit of a better future. His passing is a tremendous loss but his impact on our school district and community will be felt for many years to come.”

Mr. Romano, a 2019 inductee into the Beavercreek Athletic Hall of Fame, came to Beavercreek in 1968 to be principal of Ferguson Junior High School. From 1973 until his retirement in 1996, Mr. Romano worked in the central office as the director of staff personnel. During his tenure in the Beavercreek school system, he was instrumental in the process of hiring high-quality administrators and educators.

Numerous current and former Athletic Hall of Fame coaches and athletic directors were also hired into the Beavercreek athletic department under Mr. Romano’s watch.

In 1992, then-Athletic Director Rex Warner asked Mr. Romano to consider announcing for an ever-improving girls varsity basketball. He sat at the scorer’s table behind the microphone for the next 25 years, ending his run in 2017. He also served as a substitute announcer for the boys varsity team.
