BEAVERCREEK — Community Blood Center continues to see an increase each year the Beavercreek police and fire departments go head to head for the community.

On Monday, Aug. 29, it was the Beavercreek Police Department that pulled an upset with 61 votes over the Beavercreek Fire Department with 57 votes at Peace Lutheran Church in the Third Annual Battle of the Badges Blood Drive. The last two years the fire department has won that title.

According to the CBC, the Beavercreek Battle of the Badges had 126 donors, including 19 first-time donors and 99 donations for 118 percent of goal.

This year marked the biggest show of support for the Battle of the Badges: 2016 – 126 Donors – 99 Donations; 2015 – 101 Donors – 87 Donations and 2014 – 114 Donors – 88 Donations.

“By doing the blood drive, it’s just a fun thing for both departments to do to help the community,” said Beavercreek Township Auxiliary Fire Department Pat Cochran said.

In 2014, the fire department won 59-41 and in 2015, 52-33.

The reason for the blood drive is because donations are at its lowest point during the summer months. This is because people usually go on vacations and schools that usually provide donations are out of session. Even though the blood donations are at its lowest, blood use is normally at its highest during the summer because of accidents, surgeries, trauma, etc.

“This is just our way of giving back,” Cochran said. “You just never know when a family member or you may need blood. We just want to make sure there’s enough.”
