DAYTON — Carroll High School Director of Bands Carl Soucek was chosen to represent Ohio on School Band Orchestra ’s list of 50 Directors Who Make a Difference for 2018.

Now in his 19th year at Carroll, Soucek instructs young musicians in ensembles like Symphonic Band, Marching Band, and Jazz Combo in addition to teaching a Music Theory course during the school day. Soucek has been the program director for 17 years.

“I find a great deal of pride in watching students continue their musical pursuits after they finish high school,” Soucek says. “So often music is more a hobby than a passion. It’s amazing to see the fire in young adults that inspires them to be better musicians, and in some cases, teachers themselves.”

Soucek was chosen for this recognition from hundreds of nominees, according to School Band and Orchestra ’s website. Directors were nominated by students both former and current colleagues, musical instrument retailers, band parents, administrators, friends, former band directors, who might have even taught them, and sometimes a spouse of a director who admires the hard work and dedication their other half gives to their school music programs.
