Local DAR chapter awards students

XENIA — The Catharine Greene Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution held its annual American History Month event at the Brantley Carriage House Museum, part of the Greene County Historical Society.

Winners of the American History Essay Contest and the DAR Good Citizens Award were recognized.

The topic of the essay was “the Voyage of the Mayflower” and was to be written in the first person, explaining what he or she would have brought with him or her, what challenges would he or she have endured, and after experiencing more than two months at sea, would he or she have made different choices and why.

Teresa Baumann’s sixth grade class at Legacy Christian Academy participated in the essay contest.

Wyatt Jackson finished in first place, followed by Nathan Michael and Adeline Stalnsker in second place, and John Augustine and Stephen Augustine in third. Each winner received a medal and framed certificate after reading the essay. Honorable mention certificates were given at Legacy Christian Academy to Marina Ankeney, Lillian Cordray, Joshua Drye, Travis Ervin, Lillya Frederick, Mackensie Gaines, Molly Glover, Immanuelle Grant, Oliver Holohan, Peyton Knight, Samuel Michael, Soloman Mounts, Micah Smith, Adyson Stephens, Anna Sweeney and Jacob Thompson.

The Good Citizen Award was presented to Eileen Yang of Beavercreek High School, Abigail Minc of Carroll High School, and Bradley McCoy of Greeneview High School. The purpose is to honor a high school senior who has performed exemplary service, leadership, dependability and patriotism. Each senior was chosen by their school and received a poster explaining the design of the Good Citizen pin and a framed certificate after examples of the four qualities were presented for each one.

The next meeting of the chapter will be held at 2:30 p.m. March 12 at the Xenia Community Library, 76 E. Market Street in Xenia. Carolyn Hilliard, associate member, will speak about women of purpose to commemorate National Women’s History Month.
