“When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, ‘He is out of his mind.’” (Mark 3:30)

As Jesus began His ministry it is no surprise that His family would have doubts about it. He was saying things that upset people and that made them concerned. Even though Mary had heard the angel’s message and should have been more able to understand, it appears she too did not understand Him. Maybe He was going about His ministry in the wrong way and she could correct that. In this case, however, a mother’s influence was not what motivated Jesus. His Heavenly Father held sway there.

St. Paul says that we should seek the mind of Christ. That is a big order. We do not give up our own destiny easily. There has to be something very important for us to take second place. Well, there is! Jesus is that important. Honestly, however, we will never be able to put Him 100% first. Our human nature has too much pull on us. It is only in God’s mercy through Jesus that we can come to have any measure of the mind of Christ. And yet, we do inwardly desire that measure.

Heavenly Father, to have the mind of Christ is Your area of expertise. We desire it because we cannot accomplish it. Continue Your work of grace in our lives. Give us the thoughts of Jesus – His very mind to apply to our everyday situations. Help us to be out of our mind and in the mind of Jesus. In His name. Amen.
