BEAVERCREEK — After a pair of losses to state-ranked teams, and a couple tight wins over two other Greater Western Ohio Conference opponents, Beavercreek enjoyed a double-digit win on Jan. 18 over visiting Miamisburg.

The host Battlin’ Beavers scored the first nine points of the game, outscored Miamisburg 17-6 in the opening quarter and just kept on rolling from there, in a 53-26 win at the Ed Zink Fieldhouse.

The Fieldhouse’s namesake appreciated having a game where he could get some reserves into action, along with some players who were recently healed from nagging injuries.

Beavercreek had lost two of its previous four contests to Division II state powers Kettering Alter and Carroll. Alter is ranked No. 2 in the latest Associated Press state poll; Carroll is No. 3. They’d defeated perennial power Kettering Fairmont and Clayton Northmont during that same span.

“It was a good game for us tonight, because we hadn’t been able to play a lot of kids in the last 5-6 games, because they’ve been tough close games for us. Tonight, we were able to get everybody in,” Zink said. “The other nice thing was that we had a couple kids coming back from injuries, so we were able to give them more playing time to enable them to kinda work their way back into playing shape.

“We had some different playing combinations in the second half, and it may have looked a bit chaotic a few times, but it was nice to be able to get everybody some floor time.”

All but three of the 12 Beavercreek team members scored a point in the lopsided win. And the three who didn’t score — Susan Sebastian, Anna Engelland and Casey Bosler — got into the scorebook with one foul apiece.

So everybody got to play.

Cori Dilsavor scored 11 of her game-high 13 points in the first half, while Keaira Youngblood scored eight of her 11 points in the third quarter alone. After three quarters, the Beavers were way out in front, 48-19.

Unofficially, Bailey Draughn and Lexi Moore scored six points each, Carmen Williams, Haley Hutchins, Taylor Steinbrunner and Michaela Rhodes scored four each, and Kirsten Williams got in the scorebook with a converted fourth-quarter free throw.

“We’ll learn from this 100 percent,” said first-year Miamisburg coach Allison Jaynes. “Beavercreek’s a good program. Coach Zink knows what he’s doing. They came out very strong defensively against us, and our girls just didn’t execute the way we had planned tonight.”

Vikings sophomore guard Sha’mya Leigh had a solid evening, despite being constantly hounded by the Beavercreek defense. Leigh accounted for 16 of the team’s 26 points.

“Sha’mya’s been working really hard over the summer on her game, and it’s starting to show. She attacked Beavercreek’s defense and had a really nice game,” Jaynes said.

Beavercreek has yet another test up next: The Beavers will take on Greene County foe Bellbrook at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 23 in Beavercreek. Bellbrook claimed a 37-35 win on the Golden Eagles’ home court last season. After a five-point loss to defending Division IV champion Waterford, Bellbrook has won 11 of its next 12 games.

“It’s gonna be a dogfight here. And it’ll be fun, too. They’re a good team, and hopefully we’ll play well against them,” Zink said.
