BEAVERCREEK — Ed Zink was looking for a scorer for his Beavercreek girls basketball team Friday.

Jaelyn Bean was happy to oblige.

The senior guard scored a game-high 15 points including the final 11 of the first half as Beavercreek crushed visiting Miamisburg 69-32 inside Ed Zink Fieldhouse.

“Looking to do that this year,” Bean said. “Senior year. Make everything count.”

After scoring just one in the first quarter, Bean turned her aggressiveness switch up to full blast. She made a pair of three-pointers and five free throws — the result of driving to the hoop — in the second quarter to help Beavercreek turn a 19-8 lead into a 30-10 blowout at halftime.

Game over.

“First quarter we weren’t really hitting a bunch of shots,” Bean said. “I figured I should start driving. Take it to them. Once I started driving I got my confidence.”

In two previous varsity seasons Bean scored in double figures twice — both times 11 points as a junior. She credits her AAU season for the sudden scoring surge.

“That’s one of the things I worked on during the summer,” she said. “I made sure I was attacking the hole, looking for shots.”

That’s exactly what Zink wanted.

“It’s one of the things we talked to our guards about after last year,” he said. “I just didn’t feel they looked to score.”

The rest of the ‘Creek guards followed Bean’s lead. Seven played and six scored for the Beavers including nine points from sophomore Cory Dilsavor, seven from senior Maddi Shannon, six from sophomore Bailey Draughn, five from junior Keaira Youngblood and three from senior Braelyn Bean.

“Since day one, all of our guards have done a much better job,” Zink said.

There was a solid inside presence as well as senior Kayla Shields scored eight points and senior Alexa Low four points to go with nine rebounds and four blocks (unofficially).

Beavercreek was also assertive on defense.

The quick-handed Beavers forced 29 turnovers and limited Miamisburg to nine field goals and very few uncontested shots.

“Defensively I thought we did a pretty nice job,” Zink said. “We defended the perimeter well. Took away the penetration.”

Three of Miamisburg’s field goals came in the first quarter as the Beavercreek lead was just 12-7 after one. Shannon scored five of her seven during an early second-quarter run as the Beavers jumped out to the aforementioned 19-8 lead.

Miamisburg had scoring droughts of 5:12 and 3:52. During Miamisburg’s second drought is when Jaelyn Bean got going.

Senior Rachel Mitchell finished with six, sophomore Michaela Rhoades three and sophomore Lexi Moore two.
