Beyond the prosperity gospel

The Bible affirms that those who are generous with their assets will tend to prosper. One striking statement of this principle is given in Malachi 3:10:

The words we say matter

Matthew 12:33 “Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for the tree is known by its fruit.”

An opportunity to witness about Jesus

“So he (Philip) started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian eunuch,… This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship, and on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the Book of Isaiah the prophet. The Spirit told Philip, ‘Go to that chariot and stay near it.’ Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. ‘Do you understand what you are reading?’ Philip asked. ‘How can I,’ he said, ‘unless someone explains it to me?’ So, he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.” (Acts 8:27-31)

Becoming small to make room for God

We will continue our trip through Jesus’ Bible by taking a rather high-level look at the story of Joseph. The parts of his life story that we will be covering are contained in the book of Genesis chapters 37 and 39-41. I know that is a lot to read, but familiarity with the story helps as we proceed.

Will we believe or not?

Matthew 12:38 “Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, ‘Teacher, we want to see a miraculous sign from you.’ ”

Participating in Jesus’ call to His harvest

Matthew 9:35 “Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.”

Who defends the sheep?

Recently on a long car trip, our family enjoyed listening to the George Orwell classic “Animal Farm” on audio book.

Oh God, have mercy

“While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, ‘Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.’ Then he fell on his knees and cried out, ‘Lord, do not hold this sin against them.’ When he had said this, he fell asleep.” (Acts 7:59-60a)
